The Chishanyan site was discovered in 1896 when Japanese teacher Awano Dennojo found a stone tool like a stone axe at the foot of the Chishanyan Mountain. It can be said to be the earliest prehistoric cultural site discovered in the archaeological history of Taiwan. Zhishanyan is an isolated hill, formerly known as "Yuanshanzi". It is a sandstone hill of the Tertiary. Its top is flat, and it is a plateau formed by the hills submerged in the lake during the "Songshan Period Taipei Lake" era. Today, traces of being hit by the waves can still be seen on the rocks on the tops and slopes of the mountains. The total area of the mountain is about 25,000 square meters, and the top of the mountain is about 8,000 square meters flat. The top of the mountain is about 40 meters above sea level, and the surrounding flat ground is about 7 meters above sea level. In prehistoric times, mountain tops, mountain slopes and surrounding flat grounds were all used as habitats for human activities. Zhishanyan has not completely changed since Taiwan emerged from the sea 6 million years ago. It faithfully records the vicissitudes of life in the Taipei Basin. It is the only place in Taiwan with 7 cultural layers. Six thousand years ago, the ancient Taipei Basin was still a saltwater lake. At that time, there were only three high hills, namely Zhishan, Yuanshan, and Treasure Rock, which were three islands. The rest of the lake was flooded. Later, after long-term sedimentation, the lake's water was gradually lost due to the cutting of the lake edge, and it slowly turned into a swamp, and then reproduced the original appearance of the Taipei Basin. Zhishanyan was six hundred years ago when the aborigines of Mao Shaowengshe, a branch of the Ketagalan tribe, came here and lived a life of fishing, hunting and nomadic farming. The artificially cultivated charcoalized rice was unearthed from the ruins with a large number of farming tools. There are sophisticated rice cultivation, a large number of deer, pig, Qiang, and fish remains. It can be seen that hunting and fishing were also popular at that time. The origin of this culture cannot be found in Taiwan. Scholars speculate that it may come from the coastal area of southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian. In the early years of Kangxi, the people of Zhangzhou who lived near Huli'an and Fan reached an agreement to develop this area. Therefore, the Zhangzhou ethnic group moved to live here. Zhishan Rock was originally located on "Zhilan Street" and was named "Zhilan Mountain" in the early days. After Zhangzhou settled here, he changed his name to "Zhishan Rock" to commemorate the scenic spot of his hometown of Zhangzhou-Zhishan.

It's a very special place to train your feet, but unfortunately, the time factor has not reached the top. So, just take a walk around the cultural and historical sites to understand the early experiences of our ancestors!

It’s full of sense of history. It’s a little scary to pass by Mr. Liu’s tomb in the evening, but many residents are still going up the mountain to exercise at this time, so it’s not that scary. The toilets are super clean. Thank you for your careful maintenance.
