Excellent breakfast place. Staff is friendly too. There is always a line here. Sitting area is limited. Most people order to go. It is a good walk from metro station. However, a definitely try place.

A good place for traditional Taiwanese breakfast

The radish cake is good. They have other traditional breakfast biscuits and breads too, not forgetting sweet or salty soy milk drink. But it's very traditional and lacks some variety like hams, sausages or burger patties .

The name of the shop has black pepper buns in the name but this shop serves a lot more than black pepper buns. During the morning hours they have a breakfast menu which consists of your typical Taiwanese breakfast. Think dan bing, onion flatbreads, scallion eggs, etc. They do serve a thick flatbread similar to FuHong but the thinner variety is much better here. In the afternoon the menu is different and focuses more on snacks like sweet and savory flaky buns. The 燒餅 with pork during breakfast hours and the 小酥餅 in the afternoon are the things to get here. I would come back here for those and especially the 小酥餅, which are analogous to scallion 蟹殼黃. These are five star quality items and if I only had those I would give this shop five stars. However, the black pepper bun isn’t that great and although different than the typical variety. Different isn’t good in this instance. The 厚燒餅 wasn’t that great either and I found it not crunchy enough and slightly too sweet for my liking.

I had the pepper pie and little pies here. They’re both good. The skin of pepper pie was very thin and crispy. It becomes my favorite black pepper pie in town now.

Great black pepper pie. Very juicy and the meat was full of black pepper flavor. The pie itself was a bit different and more crusty than the usual thick and doughy texture that I was expecting. It was tasty nonetheless. I was digging the small green onion pie as well. You definitely don’t wanna miss it when you visit the Shilin night market.
