[Keelung Thousands of People Monument behind the hidden garage]
A landscape postcard titled "Keelung Thousand People's Tomb" during the Japanese Occupation era. There are two monuments in the photo, "The Monument of Military Crematorium" and "The Tomb of the Dead in the Guards Division". It is a bit difficult to find them. Led by the strolling guide, I came to Alley 4, Lane 198, Long'an Street. There is a garage opposite the Ksitigarbha Temple not far from the uphill. Two monuments are hidden behind the garage.
To see these two monuments, you have to climb up to the top of the garage. In the old photos, the two monuments are standing in the exquisite and elegant forest garden. There are mountains and rocks as seats and a pavilion on the side. In contrast to today, the grounds are messy and ruined, which makes people bewildered.
Speaking of the history of these two monuments, we should start with the Yiwei War in 1895, when the people of Taiwan declared the establishment of the Taiwan Democratic State and rejected the Shimonoseki Treaty to cede Taiwan. The Japanese government then assigned Prince Nohisa Kitashirakawa to lead an elite guards division to support Governor Shiki Kawayama to take over Taiwan by force.
On May 29, 1895, the Japanese army landed at the end of Gongliao Ao, and entered Taipei City on June 7 and announced the beginning of power on the 17th. During this period, the Japanese army had few casualties in combat. However, the soldiers suffered from the epidemic because they did not adapt to the environment in Taiwan. The total number of deaths reached 2,156. So the Japanese army set up a crematorium at the third pit of Keelung, cremated the dead, and then transported the ashes back home. Finally, the ashes of the ashes were collectively buried next to the crematorium, and this monument of the military crematorium was built as a memorial. Because more than thousands of people died, it was called the "Mound of Thousand People". The following year, the Japanese government held a spirit-calling festival at the crematorium, and in the 31st year of the Meiji era (1898), a memorial to the "Tomb of the Dead in the Regimental War" was established.
