清道光年間新社婦人潘古祿,在海邊岩石縫間撿拾了一尊聖母媽祖神像,地方上的原住民及漢人齊集眾議,建立了主祀媽祖的廟宇,供村人焚香膜拜,這是慈仁宮的前身。雖歷經多次重修整建,整體建築仍保存建廟初期古蹟古物。 在慈仁宮外有二塊告示牌,一為「奉憲示禁」、另一為「原住民遺址」。原住民遺址牌說明凱達格蘭龜霧社為原住民發祥地,後分別在宜、北、中、南族分四支,凡以山橄欖樹為族記者,皆吾族親也。 又說明朝天啟6年(CE 1626年)西班牙艦隊由菲律賓北上,繞到東北角海岬登陸,遂以國都Santiago命名,漢人稱為「三貂角 」,將原龜霧社譯名為三貂社,這是凱達格蘭三貂社的由來。
