★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 新莊ㄧ直到民國二十三年時才有自來水可以飲用，在此之前居民必需到稱為「圳溝」的後村圳取用大漢溪水，賣水的行業因應而生。當時受僱挑水的有三人，已知的是阿溪仔、辮仔。而所謂「好錢擔好水，歹錢擔歹水」則說明了酬勞的多寡決定所挑用水的潔淨品質。其實，挑水人也會走其他的巷子，只因278巷大家比較常走，挑水巷之名由此而生。（文轉載自巷口牌匾）

The so-called "good money bears good water, bad money bears bad water" shows that the amount of compensation determines the clean quality of the water picked. In fact, water-carrying people will also go to other alleys, just because people in Lane 278 walk more often, the name of the water-carrying lane was born from this.
