龍潭市區也步上三角湧後塵被炮火焚毀,眼見義軍就要全軍覆滅,胡嘉猷毅然決定兵分兩路向楊梅及銅鑼圈突圍。但為求順利脫險立刻請求自願斷後者,結果馬上有七十三人組成斷後部隊,大隊順利脫困加入吳湯興部隊繼續抗日大業,事後村民將英勇的七十三人合葬一處,民國七十四年村民集資蓋廟取名忠義七十三公廟,萬世永享香火。

七十三公忠義廟,是祭祀乙未戰爭在當地死亡的七十三名客家義軍。1895年7月,日軍山根信成少將率軍夾攻龍潭,遭到義民首領胡嘉猷抵抗,發生安平鎮之役、龍潭陂之役。後,義軍不敵,轉進關西、新埔一帶,其中魏阿盛等七十五人在龍潭竹窩子被日軍逮捕處死七十三人。當時死亡者有名字可考者共有六十六員,七員姓名不詳。僅有黃任義重傷裝死、以及日軍留下最年輕的胡玉山以埋葬遺骸。 按2011年秋祭時報導,凌雲村社區發展協會理事長彭李琳說明該些死亡人員平均不到三旬,後代逃亡各地,至今只追蹤到三十三員的後代。他們的遺孀結伴逃亡到今石門水庫附近樹林,為防止台灣原住民出草獵首,只好將嬰兒勒死,避免啼哭洩漏行蹤,以保眾人安全。六旬的盧金煌表示祖父逃到南投縣神木村落腳;五十七歲的黃清順自述曾祖父黃水鳳是七十三公之一,祖父跟著同村的成人逃到台東當童工。 1970年代年初,由地方人士發起重建義軍墳墓。1973年,鄉民代表吳祥蒸發起重建七十三公忠烈塔,廟身於1983年6月6日完成。 廟身位在聖亭路133巷,2002年秋祭時,鄉代會副主席徐玉樹、鄉代蔡達雄發現廟後的墓碑已被風化侵蝕殆盡,2016年春祭時,桃園市長鄭文燦見到石碑上只能見到「考」字,遂計畫修復,他允諾請桃園市政府客家事務局修復,以及協助忠義廟舉辦相關活動。以每年國歷3月29日青年節春祭、10月25日台灣光復節秋祭,後來配合假期改為3月和10月底最後一個周日。在3月29日春祭時,廟方也會舉行閹雞比賽,在2011年報導時,為龍潭鄉公所唯一編列預算供祭祖儀式的廟宇。

Seventy-five people including Wei Asheng were arrested and executed by the Japanese in Zhuwozi, Longtan. At that time, the deceased had names available for examination, there were a total of sixty-six members, and the names of seven were unknown. Only Huang Renyi was seriously wounded and pretended to be dead, and the Japanese army left the youngest Hu Yushan to bury the remains. According to the 2011 Autumn Festival report, Peng Lilin, the chairman of the Lingyun Village Community Development Association, stated that the deaths were less than thirty on average, and the offspring fled to various places. So far, only 33 offspring have been traced. Their widows fled to the woods near the current Shimen Reservoir. In order to prevent the aborigines of Taiwan from hunting for their heads, they had to strangle the babies to avoid crying and leaking their whereabouts to keep everyone safe. Lu Jinhuang, in his 60s, said his grandfather fled to Shenmu Village, Nantou County, and settled in Shenmu Village, Nantou County; 57-year-old Huang Qingshun reported that his great-grandfather Huang Shuifeng was one of 73 grandfathers, and his grandfather fled to Taitung to work as a child worker with the adults in the same village. In the early 1970s, local people initiated the reconstruction of the tombs of the rebels. In 1973, Wu Xiang, the representative of the villagers, rebuilt the 73rd Gongzhonglie Pagoda, and the temple body was completed on June 6, 1983. The temple is located in Lane 133, Shengting Road. During the autumn ceremony in 2002, Xu Yushu, vice chairman of the township representative committee, and Cai Daxiong, the township representative, discovered that the tombstone behind the temple had been eroded by weathering. During the spring ceremony in 2016, Taoyuan Mayor Zheng Wencan saw the stone monument Only the word "Kao" could be seen on the site, so he planned to repair it. He promised to ask the Hakka Affairs Bureau of Taoyuan City Government to repair it and assist the Zhongyi Temple in organizing related activities. Every year, the Spring Festival for the Youth Day on March 29th in the Chinese calendar and the Autumn Festival on October 25th for Taiwan’s Liberation Day were later changed to the last Sunday in March and October in line with the holidays. During the Spring Festival on March 29, the temple will also hold a capon competition. When reported in 2011, it was the only temple in the Longtan Township Office that budgeted for the ancestor worship ceremony.

拜讀鍾老先生的台灣人三部曲,才知道龍潭當年有這麼一批不顧一切保衛家園而犧牲的英雄們。可惜的是台灣在歷史文化保存上似乎相當不受重視,這裡好像缺乏經費去維護,也不見最該有的敘事碑文,如果連說故事讓大眾了解這塊土地曾經經歷過的傷痛的努力都沒有,又怎麼對得起當年守護家園的這些先人呢?台灣人在面對國際化及兩岸關係的龐大複雜問題時,最應該了解的是自己家鄉的過去以及這塊土地曾經承受過的痛苦磨難,唯有如此,我們才能真正認識自己…
