林默娘媽祖民間的信仰,天上聖母的廟宇非常之多,臺灣則有3000多座以上媽祖廟,因地而異,且名稱說法不一。由於媽祖神像來自於福建省等不同地方,由於不同人們去奉請,所以名稱說法也盡不相同;來自湄洲島分香者稱湄洲媽,來自泉州三邑分香者稱溫陵媽,來自同安縣分香者稱銀同媽,來自安溪縣分香者稱清溪媽,來自漳浦縣分香者稱烏石媽;也有把來自莆田的叫大媽,來自仙遊的叫二媽,來自惠安的叫三媽。民間還有一種說法,媽祖面色分三類,金面為公家勅封,專屬官吏供奉,為「官府媽」,又稱為「大媽」;粉面(紅面),為讀書人、商人所朝拜,庇佑舉子、行商,為「士子媽」,稱為「二媽」;黑面者主為漁農人民驅除妖邪,庇佑民眾;稱為「三媽」。目前臺灣媽祖廟大致可分為三大派:一是軍派或稱水師派-主要是以跟隨明鄭來臺的水師後代為主;二是官派又名仕紳派-多為跟隨清朝施瑯提督的官員後代為主;三是民派又名民間派-多為海員、漁民、工商界人士和遷移居百姓為最多。
