據先人傳述,在距今貳佰餘年前,有謝姓三兄弟(長為謝逢開、次為謝慶、三已佚名),自福建泉州謝厝街渡海來台,初住彰化番仔窪(今之芳苑),再遷移寶斗(今之北斗),暫住,後遷至現在口湖鄉青蚶村北面,因冬季西北季風強烈,飛沙屯積,又遷至外埔(今之埔南村),當時外埔已開發,有街道營商,便選擇在此經營油車(榨油廠),及布店,生活逐漸安定。 謝姓兄弟中有二位較俱遠見,為建立自己之部落,乃選擇再遷移,而選擇現在謝厝村的謝厝為目標,遷移後定名為謝厝寮,以事開墾,惟兄弟中有一位尚留外埔,因受傾軋,不久亦遷至謝厝寮共住,而發展為今之謝厝寮。 渡海來臺之謝姓三兄弟,攜有吳府三千歲之香火,因神靈顯赫,為感神恩,而為其雕塑神像供奉,吳府三千歲本是五府千歲兄弟排列第三,所以稱吳府三千歲,可能當時先人未知其由,誤以為吳府三千歲是三位兄弟,而分別雕塑三尊金身,分為大三王、貳三王、參三王,此為本庄奉祀三尊王爺之特殊情形,初為方便集體朝拜,先搭草寮安奉神像。 滿清時代治安不良,各村莊常有寇盜入侵,謝厝寮人丁稀少,常寡不敵眾,每次聞有寇盜侵入時,惟有祈求吳府三千歲庇佑,吳府三千歲常顯化人丁應敵,使寇盜不敢侵犯,外界傳聞謝厝寮人多驍勇,其實乃吳府神威顯赫護佑之功也。 迨西元一八四七年,(清道光二十七年歲次丁未),庄民感懷王爺恩澤乃集資興建磚造小廟奉祀,取名為順天宮,座東向西,至據明治年間以無神論政策,摧毀寺廟,焚燒神像,當時爐主預先將吳府三千歲金身請掩在五谷大櫃內避難,至民國三十四年台灣光復時,庄民經濟拮据難予重建廟宇,但敬奉虔誠之心未曾遺忘,所以每年逢農曆九月十五日吳府三王爺聖誕,暫以搭壇方式慶祝,回憶昔時醫藥尚未發達,庄民若有病痛,均以請教吳府三千歲賜丹方及挖其神像底座之木屑烹服治病,至為靈驗,庄民益感神恩,現神像底座ㄧ大洞可為證明,民國四十五年歲次丙申年間,村民再集資在現在之活動中心,整修該簡陋磚造之小廟宇,早晚、初一、十五日,方便庄民信徒敬奉膜拜,民國五十一年,地方人士有感於需要,而有轉移座北朝南之議,於民國六十九年間,有居外之高雄人士陳勝勇大德,承吳府三千歲托夢欲至其家中鎮宅,陳大德遂自高雄騎機車至本宮了解情形,廟內見王爺神像,發現其中參王爺金尊即是夢中之神像,故向主事者請示經頭家仔及爐主答應其奉請參王爺金尊至其家中奉祀,於每年回駕進香以慶祝聖誕倍增盛況,當時庄民經濟不佳,紛紛往外阜謀生,以改善家境,每年吳府王爺千秋日始回鄉慶祝,並帶動外地信眾大德參香,常被外地善信大德建議廟宇狹小參香不便,有重建之必要。
