This place was magical.

Just a ridiculous amount of food if u order the large “ru-gan” kinda meatball minestrone when u think about it just with entirely different ingredients and lotta starch that thickens the soup: u gotta add plenty of white pepper and some black vinegar and chili sauce to ur tolerance as the base soup is kept somewhat bland—for me, that is—so that u may customize I agree—unless u enjoy roughing it—get it all to go. They start handing out numbers at 10:30; u’ll likely pick up round 11 as that’s when the soup is ready. U’ll see a constant stream of people and on mopeds (yes moped parking available) most just stopping to pick up bags of strung up triangularly wrapped glutinous rice in bamboo leaves. U don’t need a number to buy these “Lo-tzon” so just indicate by fingers if u must how many u’d like: I recommend 2 per. The lo-tzon is to be eaten with again white pepper and soy sauce and vinegar—to taste. They have 4? maybe more kinds of savoury congee which I haven’t tried but those start being served after 11:30. Summary: if u get the large 75nt + 2 small bags of noodles—only one kind—total 85nt—both of u’d be amply full. Get 2 lo-tzon to go cause I realize 4 might be overkill but actually I would get 4. Soup + 2 noodles (5nt each) + 2 sticky rice (lo-tzon) = 205nt. The quality for both is, think, wayyyyyyy over price asked. And u’ll love the old man—heart of this rig—and likely his entire family—all three generations backing him: 2 daughters, 2 sons/son-in-laws, 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters + various uncle-aged extras .. .. this operation that spans 5 traditional-sized stalls/garages .. with its own parking .. .. this is mom and pop on juice. Loyal customers and lol .. it all shuts down at 12:30 pm. They start work at 8 am or earlier as I’ve noted from early runs and they sold me a Lo-tzon at 9 am one time. And if u watch them work, u’ll realize that this dance—this making of—is well choreographed and every player knows her part. Try the granddaughters if u wanna hack out some English or just point to the photos in Google and gesture small/big and to-go. The noodles in little bags will be right by the cashier when ur number is called and u pay for order. OK go get this—not to be missed—and yes it’s pork and a few shrimps and likely the broth is chicken or pork-based. The Lo-tzon has a yolk and piece of pork—easily removed. Vegetarians .. just have the rice in the Lo-tzon. 2 places to eat-in: beside and across from the main stand. I chose to return to UIJ—the best u can get for backpacker and likely for private .. regardless—best common room/kitchen—hands down. And Tainan far exceeds Taipei for the laid-back hipster.

Really tasty. It's like a sweet and sour soup with fish, but super delicious.

People were queuing for this noodle and it smells so good, so i ordered a bowl to eat. It's delicious

Zhong was better than the soup, open at 10am for takeaway (line up and get a number) then dine in starts at 10:30.

Best Lu Mian in Tainan! You gotta brave through the local mob to get to it early in the morning. Often sold out by 11am but on a Monday I was lucky enough to get a bowl! Frenzy locals queue up for the noodles as well as the porridge. Locals pick up take away like 10 orders at a time. I passed by here many times and there's always a crowd and commotion (when there's still food). Worth the quick queue. Sweet tasting lu mian. Nobody seems to dine inside (quite dirty). You pay and you get a bowl to take with you (self service!). Lots of stuff in the noodles, carrots, raddish, meat, cilantro, garlic tofu skin? Black fungus... Can get noodles or noodle plus rice sticks combo. Small/Medium/Large 65/85/130. Huge portions
