成大都市計畫系副教授張秀慈帶領研究生團隊,109/06/18在左鎮區公所發表「蔗鎮」糖鐵左鎮線遺產旅遊計畫,提出從 菜寮車站(化石園區)到左鎮車站(左鎮老街)全長約3公里,沿途打造成鐵道意象、善左祕境、糖鐵開拓到惡地景觀等,將化石園區的觀光能量,帶進到左鎮街區內。 台南玉井糖廠到善化糖廠間的玉善線鐵路停駛多年,沿線車站和鐵軌幾乎消失,成大都市計畫系提出「遺產旅遊」計畫,打造糖鐵玉善線左鎮段之文化路徑,串聯菜寮車站(化石館)至左鎮車站老街全長約3公里,在台灣很少有糖鐵是經過自然和惡地景觀,有其獨有的特色及觀光吸引力。 左鎮化石園區開館一年就吸引50萬以上遊客,能量如果帶入左鎮街上,與區公所討論後,希望將玉善線糖鐵成為可以帶動地方發展的著力點;一開始發想要復駛但門檻難度高,因此採用現在很流行的國際觀光旅遊概念叫「遺產旅遊」,嘗試讓糖鐵線連結地方歷史。 玉善線(玉井善化糖廠)左鎮段有兩個車站,菜寮車站(原址是化石園區附近的光榮社區活動中心),到左鎮街上的左鎮車站,約有6公里,路線高低起伏,還保有少數的小火車鐵軌,途中經過起伏地形,原始林相以竹林和桃花心木居多,也是最具挑戰性的路線,還有經過一處山頭當年用炸藥要炸隧道,結果土質鬆軟直接崩落;最後一段是經過月世界的惡地形。 當地居民還提到「偷甘蔗」的回憶,小火車爬坡時速度開始減緩,大家會跳上火車抽甘蔗;還有早年用牛車把甘蔗載到蔗埕堆放,再由小火車運到糖廠,未來可以設計牛車或鐵牛車體驗,讓遊客體驗以前左鎮地區運蔗的艱難及開闢鐵路的困難。 玉善線左鎮段經過的四周為地勢較高的丘陵包圍,相較於台灣西部地區其他糖廠如雲林虎尾糖廠北港線,嘉義蒜頭糖廠朴子線 ,具有高程變化,其環境上的獨特性,是具有景觀遊憩發展的潛力;早期左鎮糖業發展興盛留下文化路徑與歷史記憶,隨著南橫公路(台20省道)出現,使得文化特色漸被遺忘 ,透過「鐵道遺產旅遊」方式重新再找回來。

2022重新設計整理後的社區公園,乾凈且走精細小而美路線,可惜沒有舊火車擺設,不然會更有感覺。此為左鎮舊站,以前是連結到玉井跟善化,有其歷史意義,雖然公園不大,但可以看出重新整理的用心,來左鎮可以當輕旅行的點,來看看逛逛。
