In the early days of the establishment of the school in 1980, marine science was listed as the focus of development. In the second year (1981), the first teaching unit in the marine field was set up, the "Institute of Marine Biology". In 1986, the School of Marine Science was established. With the establishment and integration of various related institutes and programs, it has become a complete marine college covering the fields of marine science, biotechnology, marine environment, engineering technology, coastal governance and marine affairs. The Linhai Campus was completed in 1990, laying the foundation for development. In 1993 and 2006, the Haizi Building and Offshore Building were completed respectively, which provided ample teaching and research space. The "Haiyan III" research ship started operation in 1993, making teaching and research more complete. In order to meet the needs of the country's development, the "Fisheries Promotion Committee" was established in 1986 to assist the development of fisheries and fishing villages by relying on the professional abilities of teachers. There are currently three departments, two institutes and one doctoral program, with a total of 55 full-time teachers, all with doctoral degrees. The founding dean is Professor Zhang Kunxiong. The previous deans include Professor Chen Zhendong, Professor Mo Xianqiao, Professor Xu Detun, Professor Chen Yangyi, Professor Liu Jinyuan, Professor Chen Hongyuan, and Professor Wang Zhaozhang. The current dean is Professor Li Xianhua.

It is located at the foot of Chaishan Mountain and adjacent to Xiziwan. It is close to the mountains and the sea. In the evening, the sunset is accompanied by the magnificent sea view.
