日本時代，曾經設立了蕃薯寮廳山杉林支廳，以進行山杉林區與阿里關區的治理事宜。這支廳，位階如今日的警察分局，顯現其重要性。山杉林支廳的位置，即今已經裁撤的合森派出所所在。
