★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A bit over hyped. The food is ok. Nothing really special but tasted ok. I suppose you go there for the atmosphere. It was really crowded, with bus loads of tourists.
The queue to get the food (it is just only boxes) is long. But there are plenty of seating, upstairs. Got free soup, self service.
There is a shop for souvenir, drinks, ice cream, etc. Short queue.
There is a rice museum on the upper level. Use QR codes to get information.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Taiwan is famous for its affordable tasting train station lunch boxes I had the braised chicken leg rice. The Chihshang lunch box is particularly good due to the quality of the rice. The chicken leg and pickled vegetables were good but nothing extraordinary.
For the price it is really good deal. The line is long during peak times but worth the wait.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ tried the nº1 pork variety lunch box. the rice was indeed tasty and the sausage was nice. but other than that, overall was quite mediocre to warrant such a long wait. a few taiwanese i spoke to agreed that the regular railway lunchboxes that you get on the train are better tasting than these ones from this shop. also had the rice grain ice cream soft serve which tasted like any vanilla ice cream. really didn't taste like rice at all - disappointing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Despite it having many stores around the island, I think this place, which is the main store, is worth visiting for anyone who comes here. There are many other box meals places around, but at this place you’re able to bring your box meals and go into these old train carts they’ve transformed into a dining area.
Don’t expect to see much history and culture though. The three story building was mostly dining area with few decorative pieces on the history of the box meal. There is also a section on the first floor selling various items made from 池上rice. Overall, I still recommend the place for the experience of dining the the train carts. Plus, the box meals taste pretty good.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Seems its a place that's been around for long.
The rice is nice. They have soup on the side, self service. That little vege to the right of the egg is quite tasty. I thought the portion of pickled vegetables could be less, but all and all it is ok. Food was about 100NT or less.
Oh, if you share one of their post of FB now, you can show them and get a free rice flavoured ice cream.
There's souvenirs in the shop too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ When in Chishanh you must have their classic bento. the tiny museum is nice and gives a timeline of when the bento was started in 1940 using just leaves to wrap some meat and rice balls japanese style. there is a couple places for photo ops in this place but nothing too outstanding. The food was so bad, the rice was dry and tasteless, and the meat was also quite dry. The pickled veggie was good though. Lower your expectations and just remember the people in the past who got these bentos probably wasn't as picky as you.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Long very long lines to purchase bento boxes. The food was ok, but I feel the long wait and very limited parking took away the experience. The rice was very dry and the portions where small. The best part of the meal was the two little pork chops which had flavor. The traffic is so bad that the police is trying their best to direct traffic as there is a sea of people and cars blocking the streets.
