The ancient artifact "Baishoulian Rock Coffin" unearthed at the Baishoulian site in Chenggong Township, Taitung County, is left over from the prehistoric culture of eastern Taiwan. It is a representative megalithic structure of the "Kirin Culture" from 2000 to 3000 years ago. Its block rock modeling presents artistic beauty, representing Taiwan's sophisticated stone-cutting technology and art in the prehistoric era. It has important cultural characteristics of the late prehistoric Neolithic period and is one of the most complete rock coffins in Taiwan. According to historical records, several rock coffins can be seen at the Baishoulian site, but most of them have been damaged. One of the most intact coffins was unearthed on November 20, 1985 and placed in the Cultural Office of Taitung County Government (formerly Taitung County Cultural Center) Plaza. On September 18, 1996, the Cultural Construction Association held a meeting for the designated site survey of important antiquities. Many members of the archaeology committee recognized that the antiquities have important historical, cultural, artistic, and scientific value, and the quantity is scarce. It was designated as an important antiquities in the announcement of the Cultural Development Council on March 5, 1997.
