Very nice place!

Great alternative to Taroko if you want to explore a river valley and actually be able to safely reach and swim in the river in relative peace (I.e. without battling hoards of tour bus groups). Visited during mid-week and the place was not busy. Here's the catch: you can't drive right in, which means a pretty long hike (realistically at least 1.5 hours to reach the power plant at the end, though the best river spots are 15ish minutes before then). IIRC it's around 7km. But it's a smooth paved, relatively easy walk with gradual inclines. The other catch is it's supposedly limited access to a set number of visitors per day and involves registering at the first police station in town, then handing over the permit at the last police station (the one with the swing gate). The is no admission fee. Also no bikes allowed past the swing gate. So, it's a bit of a pain to reach, but this relative high deterrent factor probably helps keep the numbers down, giving you a bit more peace to enjoy the river once you finally find your spot. Really great boulders to explore in the river bed, as well as some cool cliff faces, and of course the beautiful vibrant blue pools of water. Since you're looking at a roughly 4-hour minimum roundtrip time commitment, you're going to get hungry. No worries, there are a number of snack shops along the entire route with things like pork sausages, sticky rice in a bamboo stalk, mochi, beer, water, tea, etc., etc. You won't go hungry... So, if you've read this far, there is a 'short cut' to getting to this spot on the river a lot faster. You hire a local to drive you in for 200NT per person. Details should be at the first parking lot, though service is probably only in Chinese.

A must see for anyone visiting Taipei and northern Taiwan. Beautiful. Be prepared for a bit of of litter though. Being a western traveler we appreciate special places being cared for properly. Not sure if it is the invading PRC or what, but seriously. Take a few hours and pick up the plastic, people are coming to see nature. I would be willing to pay a fee to ensure this special place remains litter free.

Must visit spot in Hualien. It'll took around 2 hours round trip. But definitely worth it when you cool yourself down in the crystal clear water!

Amazing place. I cannot read Chinese so I'm not sure what they are saying but the place is accessible. But do not follow google maps, the old road is gone. There is an alternative road right next to the river. It is a basic dusty road with many bumps and holes. If you take this road you will reach the place from the sedond side of the bridge. Just explore and you will reach it.
