「能高横断道路の殉職者」の慰霊碑を祭る小さな祠は花蓮県吉安郷の台九丙線にあります。 能高越嶺横断道路は大正6年(1917年)9月15日東段の工事が始まり、大正7年6月30日(1918年)全線44キロ長さ道路が開通しました。 その後も建設工事が続けられ、1940年~1945年にかけて西の桐里から東の銅門までの全線が竣工した。途中で険しい中央山脈を越えなければならないので難工事が続き、当時大量な工事費がかかり、厳しい環境の中に落石や転落事故などが度重なり、労働災害による殉職者は多くいました。 この高さ160㎝、幅74㎝の玄武岩の慰霊碑で、表面には、「大正六年九月起工、大正7年正月竣工、初音から奇萊主山まで十三里あり、工事費四萬二千圓をかかりました。 警備員:八千五百人。 職工:一萬四千人。人夫:三萬六千人」の文字が刻みこまれ、碑の裏面には尊い犠牲となられた名前も刻まれています。
