永添藝術 ‧ 金馬賓館當代美術館 ALIEN Art Centre

I had a great afternoon with my friend visiting the exhibition and relaxing at the cafe., and Kingley Ng’s artwork fits the space and history well, and it’s good to see James Turrell’s art piece! Docents are very helpful, would be great to see more programs in future.

Up there as one of the best galleries in Taiwan in my opinion - such a shame that its too small. Nonetheless, Alein Art Centre's historic context makes it the perfect place for the art it was exhbiting, really quite stunning. It has beautiful exhibitions up at the moment, is accessible for all ages and the staff are super friendly. Would recommend to anyone going to Kaohsiung, art nerd or not!

The building used to be hostel for soldiers who waited here to be sent off to Kinmen and Penghu. It is now turned into a contemporary arts museum. It is my second time here and I found it well curated and art pieces well presented. Ticket is not cheap in Taiwan standard but acceptable as it is a private museum.

Thanks to my love for James turrell, I found this little gem by searching for him in Taiwan. This is the only place in Taiwan that has his installation. The building architecture is redesigned from a historical building and was aesthetically designed leaving history untouched while enhancing beauty by creating many windows on the walls. Most of the museum is open concept and reminded me of the Garden or Fine Arts Kyoto by Ando Tadao. Another highlight is the highly refined food in their Alien Cafe. Highly recommend the 500NTD ticket which can be fully redeemed with food or merchandise including entrance. To enjoy the museum by yourself please come during weekdays for a healing time. The only small little downside is that when I was enjoying the art work, they have a staff that keeps a lookout, I felt that I was watched all the time which made me uncomfortable. I have never had this kind of experience in all the museums that I have been. I hope they take this advice constructively.

Was pleasantly surprised to see a Turrell piece here. We liked both of the shows that were up when we visited and the food at the café was quite good. We actually went down to Kaohsiung from Taipei specifically to visit this art center and it was worth the trek. Keep in mind, the Turrell piece is on view only certain periods of time throughout the day so plan accordingly.

Great small museum with well curated shows. The building lends itself to the shows I seen while there. Any time I am in Kaohsiung I will stop by to be inspired.

Nice renovated building. But very few artworks and all those are of local artists that even licals hardly know. However the entrance ticket price is on par with top European museums, 250NTD/ 9 USD, must be a joke. You may deduct the ticket price on the food in their cafe, but the cheapest set meal is 480 NTD and it is pretty simple food, something that you may but in a food court for 150NT$. The cafe staff is very nice though.

I was totally moved by the exhibitions in this museum. The art works are displayed in a style that well cooperated with the architecture itself. It deserves you to spend couple hours here.
