The Alishan National Scenic Area is a popular recreation destination for mountain climbing and hiking, as well as for producing wasabi and tea. Huge cypress trees and suspension bridges line the Giant Tree Cluster Trail. There are also sweeping valley views from an observation deck, and lush foliage around the picturesque Xianglin Arch Bridge. The colorful Alishan Shouzhen Temple has striking, ornate architecture. A wild and wonderful place, the Alishan National Scenic Area is very mountainous and actually contains twenty-five mountains that tower to a height of two thousand meters or more. Exploring the hills, valleys, waterfalls and forests is a magical affair, and the scenery is stupendous to behold. Sunrise, sea of clouds, railway, forest and sunset are the images of the five wonders that always come to mind when Alishan is mentioned. As soon as dawn arrives in the early morning, a glimpse of sunlight slowly makes its appearance above the mountain, and a new day begins. At dusk, the orange red sunset is another breathtaking scene. On the other hand, Alishan’s sea of clouds, one of the top 8 scenes in Taiwan, are usually seen during sunrise and sunset on a sunny autumn day. One of the three remaining mountain railways in the world is in Alishan. It was built to transport wood in the past, but nowadays it has transformed to a tourism train, and shuttles tourists throughout the forest. Visitors who don’t want to take the train can take a walk on the trails and enjoy the nature and fresh air. You will discover the charming side of an alpine forest. Each year from late spring to early summer, thousands of fireflies gather at Alishan. The population accounts for about two-thirds of Taiwan’s fireflies from low to medium high altitude areas, and up to 42 species. No wonder this area is known as the best place to view fireflies. Many communities hold nighttime guided tours and other related tours during firefly high seasons, and show visitors the enjoyment of a sparkling romantic atmosphere. There are numerous trails and paths that will take you to some of the best viewpoints. A great way to see a lot of the reserve in one go is to take the Alishan Forest Railway, which snakes its way through forests and along mountainsides before stopping off at Fenqihu, a picturesque village with the ruins of a Shinto temple. Home to the Tsou people who are renowned for their tea making, Alishan is an absolutely gorgeous place to visit and your visit will live long in your memory.
