I	Ivo Niet on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful Pagoda. You can take the stairs all the way to the top with 360 degree views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. It's a short walk from the main road to the pagoda. If there's a lot of people it will get really tight so beware. The weather was perfect on the day I visited in January and since it was a weekday, it wasn't busy. Couldn't have had better luck.
J	Jeffrey Schwab on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Went here very first thing in the morning by bus after breakfast and I think it’s an excellent way to start out your Sun Moon Lake visit. We took the 6669 bus just outside of our hotel which took us on a route around the lake. Good bus and cheap transportation but make sure to check the times. After arriving at the stop the walk up to the pagoda takes about 15-20 minutes through lush forest. If you’re lucky you’ll hear and see wild monkeys on the way. Built in 1971 by then president Chiang Kai-shek as a dedication to his mother, this pagoda is an awesome birthday gift. Best place to see views of the lake and very quiet. Afterwards you can also walk about ten minutes to the nearby Xuan Zang Temple 玄奘寺 and learn a bit about the history of Buddhism.
J	Jun Hoe Foo on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The pagoda is nearly 2km from the pier. But it is worth the hike. The second part of the hike is easier than the first part so don't give up reaching the middle of the hill where Xuanzang Temple is. Definitely a good spot to have a bird's eye view of the lake.

The pagoda itself is stunning as well, and definitely worth the hike up and 8 storeys to the top to see the view. This is definitely better than doing the cable car ride, and I'd recommend to do this if you don't have much time at Sun Moon Lake.
