★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tons of food choice and thick cut sashimi. Yet, very economical. The older waitress was very helpful indeed. However, the younger girl on the cashier was unacceptably rude.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is a local-run Japanese food business. From selling mostly Sashimis and Chirashi-dons, they have progressed to selling cooked food that tends towards the flavours!
I must say that even though it isn’t one of the best place to have your Japanese food or Sashimi fix, this restaurant serves decent ones with generous servings at an affordable price.
Be prepared that menus are in chinese (or maybe they had an English one but we didn’t request for one) and that most of their service staffs communicate in Mandarin!
Other than that, this is one of the restaurants at Xi Men Ding that is more localized rather than a franchise chain.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had a wonderful experience here at Mei Guan Yuan locates in the centre of XiMen Ding - it is known as once of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Taipei! We came in a party of 4 at around 7.30pm which I reckon it’s a peak hour to have dinner as the restaurant was pretty crowded considering it has a ground and first floor. The store is pretty store but I’d say it’s pretty clean. As we’ve made a reservation, we were shown to our table upon arrival.
We’ve ordered a number of dishes - salmon sashimi donburi, salmon fried rice, sea urchin in a roll, Taiwanese veggies, chawanmushi (steamed egg with a prawn as topping), panfried beef, etc. Once you’ve ordered dishes worth an amount of money, the store will give you a complimentary dish - I believe it somewhat tastes like an abalone, bean curd skin.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Old second generation restaurant since 1947. Food itself is more a Taiwanese Japanese style, taste is not very authentic but its acceptable.
Price is good, and portions are quite big. Service wasn't bad but preparation time for the food was quite long.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Heard from friends that this place is a must visit if you like Japanese food, as it has been there for a long time. Ambience wise, kinda aged and doesn’t give off Japanese vibes. Food wise, it was mixed. Prawn tempura was ok, but the fish and vegetables didn’t seem like it was from the same batter. Salmon belly sashimi was good.
Overall, it didn’t live up to my expectations, and it seemed more like a Chinese restaurant than a Japanese place. I think you have to read reviews to know what’s good.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best hand rolls (temaki) 手巻き寿司 in town. Food is always fresh, waiters are fun to encounter with. Boss is very friendly if you happened to know him, a very low key type person. Yes, I will be back for another round of 寿司 sushi.
