Where abouts of the wind」、「お䜀けなんてあるさ There is a ghost」、「ほっと一息 Take a break 」等作。
Where abouts of the wind」,有著隨風往明年奔去的寄寓。
The tour guides are very friendly, and there are also Bearbricks that sell consignments from guests.
The exhibition in this issue is the wood sculpture of Tojo Akiko. The blue eyes may reveal her lonely childhood, which is very touching.
Akiko Tojo (1984 -) was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011 with a specialization in sculpture. After debuting on GEISAI♯10 in 2006, Akiko Tojo has been invited to exhibit and receive awards. In 2020, through the opportunity of ART TAIPEI OneArtTaipei to open up the Taiwan market, he is loved by Taiwanese collectors with his warm and quiet personal style.
In addition to the works exhibited by Akiko Tojo in Taiwan in 2021, the artist also specially prepared several new products for this exhibition, such as "Where abouts of the wind", "お䜀けなんてあるさThere" is a ghost", "ほっと一 Breath Take a break" and so on. In recent years, the anthropomorphic images of animals in Akiko Tojo's creations have become more obvious, and the gestures and interactions between the characters have added more childlike interest and a sense of humor.
【Creative Concept】
Akiko Tojo takes the motifs of children, women and animals with concise and rounded shapes, and features colors with a sense of pastel painting; in addition to the performance of the gestures and movements of the characters, he also pays attention to the sense of space and emotional transmission condensed by the sculpture. For artists, the inescapable emotions of "loneliness" and "fragility" are important feelings for human beings to maintain what can be called "human"; at first glance, it seems to be a negative feeling, but if one can Concretized, it can turn abstract feelings into intelligible things, showing the positive idea of "creation" to give life.
In "Hinoki", a medium that embodies emotion, Tojo Akiko felt the life essence of the evergreen tree, and the shape that will be transformed and formed through carving. like this exhibition
The name "Story of the Story" has the meaning hidden in "the deeper story after the story". The artworks embody the long-term herbal life of the original cypress, the stories recorded by the artist's history, and the new materials presented by the sculptures.
Modeling, in the future, there will be sparks that will be wiped out after encountering the audience - even if the modeling has been completed, its story is not over yet.
【Style History】
Tojo Akiko's early works were based on camphor wood, and the themes included melancholy urban women (オンナノコアonnanocore, 2007) and group portraits (ヒトの馮Parson's scenery, 2011). In her current creative career, most of her taller works were made during this period (スコールSquall, 2008). Since 2013, Akiko Tojo's main creative method is to paint on cypress wood carvings with watercolors and colored pencils. The theme gradually tends to express young women in different dresses with brisk colors. The size of the works is also mainly small and medium. Different from the slightly melancholy style of characters in the past, from 2013 to 2016, totem elements were added to the costumes of the characters, and the colors became more diverse, making the works exude warmth and fun different from the past. The period when the two elements of animals and children are the main elements in the current works was established around 2017. Of course, these two elements have also appeared in the past works, but in this period the interaction between the two, or the dependence is more closely. Artists often use animals as a metaphor for the inner state of the protagonist, such as the children and small animals who hide behind the characters or rely on the characters.
【Exhibition New Works】
Thinking that next year will be the Year of the Tiger, the artist created "Where abouts of the wind", which looks like a tiger carrying a child on its back, as if going on an adventure together. Another new work, "お䜀けなんてあるさThere is a ghost," turns the Japanese nursery rhyme "I don't have any monsters or something" (お䜀けなんてないさ) into "There are those monsters or something? This kind of self-encouragement was originally intended to tell myself, "Don't be afraid, there are no monsters", but when you think about it, you actually need such self-encouragement because you think there are monsters. It has a kind of innocence that belongs to a child. When the artist sculpts his works, he wants to cherish this kind of self-encouragement. Emotional thoughts are created.
It is worth noting that in the work "Take a break", there is a "mermaid" image of human and animal fusion that has not been seen in the past. Does this show new possibilities in future modeling? It's exciting.
Akiko Tojo said: "I always touch the story (private は often に story に touch れ て い る.)" She records the delicate changes around her life with sculpture, and uses warm colors and approachable shapes to make people open their hearts. to embrace the stories of these others. From melancholy urban women, girls whose colors are gradually lighter, and now interesting children and animals... continue to follow her! What will the friends in her story look like in the future?
