George L. Mackay (Canadian) came in 1872 and adopted Christianity into local beliefs. Also built hospitals, schools, over 60 churches.
Was not welcomed by local leaders because the idea of only one absolute god is against traditional Taiwanese beliefs (Buddhist, Daoist, Confucism) but they were moved after witnessing Mackay’s dedication.
