origin
As early as the early 20th century, Taiwan had a wooden post office. After it was converted into a reinforced concrete building, the Taipei Post Office also followed this retro style, using classical colors, like the classical pillars appearing on the walls, and the ceiling of the indoor hall. Full of moldings, the semicircular arcade at the entrance was also demolished after the restoration. The largest post office in Taiwan at that time was constructed of steel. The exterior walls were made of veneer bricks and stone washing techniques, showing the characteristics of the era, while the ceiling and column heads gave a luxurious and solemn impression. Taipei Post Office is one of the few buildings with interior decoration features during the Japanese Occupation Period. Because it is a historical site of the government, it is still used as an official office. To ensure safety, the Taipei Post Office has installed more monitors throughout the aisles. Accessories such as power switches, amplifiers, and vents of the Taipei Post Office have also been preserved.
Speaking of the historical origins of Taiwan’s postal business, one has to mention Liu Mingchuan. At that time, Taiwan’s governor Liu Mingchuan vigorously created a new postal and telecommunications policy, and set up a postal post office in the area of Jianchang Street in Dadaocheng. Because early personal letters were all delivered by the "Pianguan" (Pan was in Taiwanese, meaning the same letter). In addition to setting up postal offices throughout the province, Liu Mingchuan also set up additional stamps. In the era of the Japanese occupation, the military post office that only served the Japanese was opened to Taiwanese in 1896. Since then, the postal system in Taiwan has gradually developed. In the era of the Japanese occupation, the postal service was closely related to the railway transportation at that time. The relationship is inseparable, so the "Taipei Post Office" was established to take charge of postal affairs throughout Taiwan. It was not until after the defeat of the Japanese government moved to Taiwan that the postal service was gradually expanded. After the General Post Office moved elsewhere, it was changed to "Taiwan North District Post Administration."
Architectural and historical details
Taipei Post Office was completed in 1929. It is a work that has made breakthroughs in form and structure during the development of modern architecture in Taiwan. The designer is Kuriyama Shunichi, a creative young architect. He used a simplified classical vocabulary on this huge three-story building, just like the general public buildings at the time. The front entrance was set with arcade porches, because the base faces the vast north gate ring, and the width of the front is The extension is almost the same as the two wings. The more distinctive form of the treatment is that there are four pairs of Corinthian pillars outside the front wall, and the female wall is straight, showing only a small section of the hill. Although the whole form does not deviate from the classic color, it has the concise spirit of modern buildings. In terms of structure, H-shaped steel beams and columns and R.C. floor slabs are used, and the hall is reserved for the height of two floors. The fine ceiling and column heads give people a luxurious and solemn impression. After Taiwan's recovery, due to insufficient use, a layer was added to the roof, and the entrance hall was guessed to be removed and replaced with vulgar marble, which is a pity.
