Danshui Qingshuiyan, also known as Danshui Zushi Temple, is located at No.87, Qingshui Street, Danshui District. It was built in the twelfth year of Japan's Showa era (1937). It is dedicated to the ancestor Qingshui, an eminent monk in Anxi, southern Fujian. It is a Buddhist ancestor temple that has been heavily influenced by Taoism and Taiwanese folk beliefs. It is the center of faith in Tamsui. Every year on the fifth and sixth day of the fifth lunar month, the "Chingshui Patriarch's Memorial Day Detouring Ceremony", commonly known as "Dashui Dabai," is a grand event in Tamsui. The Qingshuiyan in Tamsui, the Mengjia Temple, the Three Gorges Temple, and the Ruifang Temple are known as the "Four Great Temples in Taipei." Qingshuiyan, Yinshan Temple, Fuyou Palace, and Tamsui Longshan Temple are collectively referred to as the "Four Major Temples of Tamsui." According to legend, in the Song Dynasty, Anxi Qingshuiyan obtained a huge piece of agarwood and carved six statues of Qingshui Patriarch. The descendants are called "Six Ancient Buddhas". During the Xianfeng reign of Emperor Wenzong of the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861), a monk came to Taiwan with an "ancient Buddha" from Qingshuiyan in Anxi, Quanzhou Prefecture, and rebuilt Anxi Qingshuiyan by alms in the Tamsui area of Taipei, revered as the "Penglai ancestor". When the gold was stolen, the brothers Weng Zhongyu and Weng Ruiyu, a gentleman from Danshui, generously donated their money and gave the monk 400 yuan to support Yingyang. The monk was so moved that he returned to Tangshan and stayed in Danshui for worship. The worshippers, the Weng brothers invited the gods to worship in the "Jishenghao" bungalow on Dongxing Street (now Zhongzheng Road, Tamsui District), which is about 50 square feet. It is also said that an Anxi Qingshuiyan brought a statue of Qingshui Patriarch "Penglai Patriarch" to Danshui Xingfuliao to beg the people of Anxi to rebuild Qingshuiyan. There were several porters who carried sagegrass in Xingfuliao because they encountered the monk for three consecutive days. He believed that it was a kind of fate, so he initiated a fundraiser. The crowd sent the proceeds from selling more than 30 cartons of sagegrass to the monk on the same day, and asked the monk to keep Qingshui Patriarch in Xingfuliao for three days to pray for safety. At the end of the three days, the monk wanted to bring back the idol and threw it to the ancestor, but he threw more than a dozen "laughing cups" and was unable to obtain the consent of the gods to leave. Everyone claimed that the ancestor would stay in Taiwan to show off his power, so The local gentry Weng Zhongyu and Weng Ruiyu brothers, under the name of Tan Yue, "Weng, Gong, Fang, Hong, Jiang, and Wang", asked the gods to worship at Jisheng Street (now Zhongzheng Road, Danshui District). In the sixth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1867), this statue of the "Penglai Patriarch" appeared to warn him when he was on a tour in Shimen District today. Suddenly an earthquake occurred and the entire village was destroyed. Because the villagers were all out, there was no one in the village, so no one was injured or killed. The Patriarch is even more respected by the people. In October of the tenth year of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1884), the French army attacked Danshui during the Qing-French War in Xizai. The Danshui people greeted the ancestor Qingshui to help, and unexpectedly defeated the French army. It is said that the patriarch manifested his spirit, and the local roof was guarded by a monk, which made the French army retreat with fear. In the Second World War, Taiwan was bombed by the Allies, and there were two unexploded bombs that fell to the temple of the ancestor. The believers attributed the cause of the unexploded to the protection of the ancestor. After the gunpowder was removed, they were changed into candlesticks and placed on both sides of the main hall to commemorate. . Danshui Qingshuiyan invited the famous masters Liao Shicheng and Guo Ta to build the front and rear halls separately. The dragon pillar is more ancient, one pillar and one dragon. The stone carvings were made by Zhang Huoguang, who died in his tenure. His son Zhang Mucheng continued to sculpt them. Most of them are figures in the "Fengshen Bang" with great skills. The woodcarving is performed by Huang Gui, and Chen Tianqi is used to show its extraordinary skills. The couplets and calligraphy of the Zushi Temple are also from the hands of famous scholars and calligraphers. This makes Qingshuiyan not only the center of faith in Danshui, but also a temple of religious art in Danshui. In 2004, Tan Yue Huang Wenxiong repaid his wish by presenting a five-fodder hat made of 20 taels of gold, inlaid with rubies and sapphires, worth more than NT$400,000 to the "Zhendian Zu", and then Mrs. Huang Wenxiong made another "Penglai ancestor." Soon after Tan Yue Hong’s family student, in order to thank the patriarch for his blessing, he also created a golden hat to dedicate his ancestor. Mrs. Hong Jiasheng also followed up, and the golden cap of the Tamsui Patriarch’s Temple has four or five scores. He often visits Danshui during festivals, and he sees the power of God.

With a long history, it is a representative temple in Danshui. During festivals, a large number of believers and pilgrims will gather. I don't know if the palace building has been rebuilt, or if the temple has been carefully maintained, it will not look worn out. Many tourists in Tamsui Old Street will gather on the steps in front of the temple to enjoy delicious food. However, such behavior is not recommended during the epidemic prevention period. I wonder if the temple has persuaded them, because they may not only obstruct the passage, but also cause epidemic prevention breaches.

The Temple was built in 1933 at it's current site, although its main deity was worshipped in China and "relocated" to Tamsui harbir and was at first in one local Gentry home. May 6th of the Chinese farmer calendar is the Temple's annual parade kickoff day. Visitors to the temple have to go through narrow street or through local food market. The Temple is within 10 to 15 minutes of walking distance from Taipei MRT Tamsui Station, depending on crowded the Old Street and Market are.
