When the sandstone is still buried under the ground, groundwater containing a large amount of iron oxide will flow along the joint fissure, and red iron oxide (rust) will gradually infiltrate and precipitate in the sandstone on both sides of the joint. The surface of this sandstone is often seen with a layered change, rich in natural and symmetrical red parallel lines, called "rust staining."
