三山國王的有不少傳說，一說是宋太祖趙匡胤借得三山的神力幫助，後才將劉張之亂平息，遂封三山國王。據臺灣鄉村禮俗記載，臺灣三山國王聖誕定為每年二月廿五。而粵東地區三山國王出遊則定在正月，一般是正月初十或十五。
