The engineers were excavating a portion of the canal in a cave. This is obviously very dangerous, time consuming work. One day, the dog heard rumblings within the earth, which the men could not hear. The dog barked furiously at them and ran in and out of the cave, trying to tell the men to leave. But they were too busy with their work and did not listen. They assumed the dog wanted to play.
The dog waited at the cave entrance and continued to bark. When the dog heard one of the support beams crack under the weight of the earth above, they ran inside again to get the men to come out. But the ceiling of the cave collapsed, burrying all six men and their loyal companion.
