According to legend, the main god of the Erwang Temple was Zheng Jing, the king of the Dongning Kingdom during the Zheng period. In the thirty-fourth year of Ming Yongli, after Zheng Jing failed to return to Taiwan in the Western Expedition, he retired to the Beiyuan Pavilion (now Kaiyuan Temple) for hunting and amusement. In the first month of the following year, he fainted and fell off the horse when he galloped in Jianei (that is, the second king), and died soon after. Afterwards, the Weiling shelter was manifested to protect the people, and the people in the village were worshipped in a small temple at the place of the horse, which was the predecessor of the temple. Zheng Jing is not only good at literary poems, author of "Dongbi Lou Ji" (a collection of classical poems written between 1664 and 1674), but also good at riding and shooting. He treated people with sincerity and respected the clan of the Ming Dynasty. During the nineteenth years of his succession, he only called himself "the son of the king of Yanping", never used titles such as "this king", and practiced Ming as Zhengshuo (Yongli). But after the failure of the westward advance, he indulged himself in political affairs and no longer planned to "anti-Qing and reviving the Ming." During Zheng Jing's reign, he used the auxiliary minister Chen Yonghua politically, and gave him the post of prime minister to lead the six officials to consult with the army and the Dongning general system, and introduced the Han official system to Taiwan; in terms of education, Zheng Jing in addition to building a Confucian Temple to worship In addition to Confucius, Taixue was established, the Four Books and Five Classics of the Han Dynasty, and the imperial examination system were introduced into Taiwan, so that Taiwan formally entered the scope of the Han culture and Chinese character culture circle. American scholar Denny Roy (Denny Roy): Although Zheng Jing was called the King of Yanping County in Taiwan and the Ming Dynasty was orthodox, the Ming Dynasty had actually perished at that time, and the Qing Dynasty had not yet ruled Taiwan.
