The second group of peoples who moved to the Lanyang Plain about 2,000-3,500 years ago The ninth national archaeological site The Marushan Archaeological Site is the first late Neolithic archaeological site in northeastern Taiwan where large-scale excavations have been carried out. The cultural layer has accumulated for thousands of years. The unearthed relics are rich and diverse. Two types of tombs, such as stone coffins and urn coffins, can exist at the same time. Within an archaeological site, it is relatively rare. In addition, a total of 12 pieces of special human and animal-shaped jade from the late Neolithic period were unearthed at the Maruyama archaeological site. This shows the important historical position of the Maruyama society in the manufacture and circulation of jade artifacts at that time. It also proves the integrity of this archaeological site and explains its history as a historical site. In a prehistoric settlement more than 3,000 years ago, the preservation of the Maruyama archaeological site is truly exceptional. The Marushan Archaeological Site is located on the Marushan hill between Marushan Village and Babao Village, Dongshan Township, Yilan County. It was discovered in the early days because private landlords on the hill wanted to set up a spiritual bone pagoda project. In Taiwan in 1987, the first private initiative A precedent for funding and cooperating with local governments, inviting archaeologists to carry out rescue and excavation work before the project. With the unearthing of a large number of prehistoric cultural relics, the Yilan County Government designated the Marushan Site as a county-designated monument in 1992, and with the revision of the Cultural Assets Preservation Law, in 1995, the Marushan Site was re-designated as a county based on the new amendments. Set the site. The Yilan County Government sent documents to the Ministry of Culture to upgrade the national archaeological site in March 107. After the archaeological site survey and review process, it was approved by the review committee and announced that it was designated as the ninth national archaeological site in Taiwan. The Ministry of Culture pointed out that the Marushan archaeological site retains the community appearance of the late Neolithic period in Yilan. At the same time, there are people from the Yuanshan culture in the Taipei Basin, and the people from the Huagangshan culture and the Beinan culture in Eastern Taiwan. Relics unearthed from the site can clearly find clues to cultural interaction between this area and other regions.

Yuanshan (Marushan): It is a small hill between Marushan Village and Babao Village, Dongshan Township, Yilan County. It was designated as a prefectural historic site on December 26, 1992 and officially named "Maruyama Site". The hill where the site is located is an isolated hill in topography. The long axis is roughly east-west and is about 600 meters long. The widest part from north to south is about 300 meters wide in the middle section, and the highest altitude is about 60 meters on the top of the central mountain. , And slowly descend to the surroundings. "Marushan Site" is a county-level site in Yilan County, and also a third-level historic site designated by the Ministry of the Interior. It is located on the southwest side of the Lanyang Plain, about 4.5 kilometers southwest of Luodong Railway Station, and about 3 kilometers northwest of Dongshan City. The administrative area belongs to Dongshan Township Maruyama Village and Babao Village. According to carbon 14 dating, more than 3,700 years ago, people lived on the Maruyama hills for nearly a thousand years. It was the Neolithic period. The hills belonged to the upper reaches of the Dongshan River surrounded by the Jiuliao River and its tributary Xinliao River. Yongquan provides sufficient water resources to residents. A large number of relics unearthed from the "Maruyama Site" are stone and pottery artifacts, including various tools, stoneware, stone waste, pot rims, ring feet, pottery handles, pottery spinning wheels and pottery puppets, etc., which are evidence of the daily life of Maruyama people . The human life phenomena unearthed at the "Maruyama Site" also include tombs, column caves, fire pits, stone structures, caves, stone tool production areas, and unknown rock piles. ====================== Maruyama Ruins Text: Jiang Zhihua (postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of History and Language, Academia Sinica) The Marushan Site is a county-level site in Yilan County. It is also a third-class historic site designated by the Ministry of the Interior. It is located on the southwest side of the Lanyang Plain, about 4.5 kilometers southwest of Luodong Railway Station, and about 3 kilometers northwest of Dongshan City. It is locally called Yuanshan On the hill of Zai; the administrative area belongs to Marushan Village and Babao Village in Dongshan Township. According to the results of archaeological investigations, it is speculated that the scope of prehistoric human activities was mainly at the top of Maruyama hill and the gentle slope of the foothills, just at the front edge of the junction of plains, hills and mountains. After being recorded by Mr. Sheng Qingyi in 1963, archaeologists successively came to the Marushan site to conduct surface collections. It was not until several trial excavations in the early 1990s that we had a clearer understanding of the site's strata. At the beginning of 1998, in response to the construction project of the "Babao Na Pagoda", with the assistance of the Yilan County Government, the Institute of History and Language of the Academia Sinica and the local landlord, a six-month three-stage rescue and excavation work was carried out. A large number of relics and phenomena provide us with the life of this group of Maruyama people in the Neolithic Age. According to the carbon fourteenth measurement, more than 3,700 years ago, people began to live on the Maruyama hill. These people lived on this hill one after another for nearly a thousand years. At this time The hill itself is surrounded by the Jiuliao River in the upper reaches of the Dongshan River and its tributary Xinliao River. There are many springs, providing water resources that are not scarce for the Maruyama people living on the hills. According to stratigraphic drilling and pollen analysis, it is shown When the crowds began to gather here, the coastline was relatively close at that time, and the hills were probably mainly wetlands, and the climate was warmer than in the past two thousand years.

It is a great thing to have a national historic site in Yilan County. Although the Marushan site is not open to the general public, it still does not detract from its value. I look forward to expanding it more in the future.
