Great place to understand local religion and the temple itself is marvelous. Go join the tour, you'll definately see much more than going by yourself.

Longshan temple is one of the most magnificent temple in Taipei. It's not a place only tourists will visit but also the locals. You can feel the serenity right after you step into the front yard. If you don't want to just take a look but really appreciate how it works in this temple, you can join a local free English walking tour hosted by tourmeaway. They teach you how to worship like a Taiwanese and explain what're the gods worshiped inside.

The tour was amazing and Cole did a great job. We know understand better the Taiwanese religion. The tour brought us around the area from the temple and taught us also about the history of the harbour area. Cole explained to us how to worship in the temple and also explained all God's and their specific meanings. We ended in the night market close by and had the time to get some local snacks as well.

We took this tour on the day we arrived in Taipei. Tour guides Violet & Vincent both took turns at presenting us with many interesting facts about Taipei in general and the Longshan Temple area in particular. At the start of the walk, Violet provided us with a background of the surrounding area. The Bopiliao historical buildings are quite special and have been well preserved. We spent some time there as Vincent was keen to explain the significance of the buildings. We visited a small temple following which we made our way through Herb alley where we were able to see many shops selling traditional herbs for medicinal purposes. The Longshan Temple itself looked very beautiful at night and both Violet and Vincent explained the rituals and their significance. They also walked the group through many deities enshrined in the temple complex explaining the purpose of worship for each of them. Then came the ‘tea house’ area where the story behind the area was provided by our guides. Snake Alley followed and though there are only a couple of shops left where snake is on the menu it is definitely worth a visit. The final stop was Huaxi Street where the night market was on in full swing. This is a must take tour as not only is the route an interesting one, but also guides Vincent and Violet were keen to tell us much about the city and its people as we walked along.
