The medical library's policy of forbidding outsiders to bring in their personal bags larger than 15 x 21 cm, is a double standard. Unfortunately, the administrators who have been implementing this policy for some time DO NOT SEE THIS AS DISCRIMINATORY. I once witnessed a female student entering with her backpack while carrying several shopping bags to the nonchalance of staffers sitting next to the chiming gate. The atmosphere in the library is conducive to studying -- well-lit, quiet and cool (sometimes too cold even!). Perhaps that is because undesirable people such as high school students are turned away (unduly and illegally) by these self-righteous, know-it-all librarians. Which leads to my next point of contention ... namely, that a few librarians need to be retrained, as they don't understand what "professionalism" really means. Overall, this *library* gives a casual observer the feeling of being in a museum more than in any other place. Only when we see more people inside, can we start calling it a "library" -- a reading/research center that offers various services while helping everyone without any discrimination whatsoever.
