★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely old town with nice people, local foods and awesome cat! He is very popular as shown on the local postcard! Not so much people here because most of tourist are hanging at Shifen so come here and enjoy peaceful time in the retro atmosphere.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really nice place for the old town feel, and worth a visit but may not be better than Shifen, which seems to be more developed in a way and also more unique in that you can float sky lanterns from the rail road tracks. There is something mystical about having a live train running through the actual town. Since these are close to each other, both deserve a visit but probably best to save Shifen for last.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very intimately small alleys with local shops. Not much to do around otherwise. There is a tradition to light lanterns and float them at the train tracks for wishes. Tourists usually arrive by train that is scheduled once and hour.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bustling street with many local stalls selling Taiwanese snacks (sausages, almond tea etc) and souvenirs. Train track available to take pictures and also release lanterns for well wishes. A bit too touristy and lacks authenticity though.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice place to visit with very mildly crowded streets. Old street, pretty valley, monorail train along with a coal towns line. Sky lamps are sometimes floating up to the sky. Highly recommended for a day trip if visiting Taipei suburban.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Pinxi is known for its Lantern festival. We were not sure if we could attend. Fortunately it was not much raining and therefore decided to visit. The Taipei city administration have arranged buses from Taipei zoo February 12. We boarded around 4:00 pm and arrived around 5:00 pm at the Municipal Pingxiguomin Junior High School. The fabulous Lantern festival was attended and soon after that it drizzled a bit. Therefore, we have to be back to bus stop, boarded and came back to the Taipei zoo. Thus, missed the exploration of the old street. Would love to visit again to explore further.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I visited Pingxi right on the Lantern Festival Day, not really busy as it was on Monday and drizzled the whole night. It’s sad to see many stores are silent with the doors shut. Anyway, an interesting experience to visit the old street settled alongside the railways, and enjoy the vibe.
