This department is one of the school's founding science departments. It was established in August of 1949 and named "Taiwan Provincial Maritime College Driving Department". From 53 to 81 from the Republic of China, through the "Provincial Taiwan Marine Transportation Institute", "National Taiwan Marine Transportation Institute" to "National Taiwan Ocean University", and the department name from "Navigation Department" to "Marine Transportation Department", etc. In 1981, the official name was changed to the "Department of Merchant Shipping". In 1989, the Master Class of the Department of Merchant Marine was established; the in-service special class of the Master of the Department of Merchant Marine was established the following year. In the year of the Republic of China, the doctoral class of the Merchant Shipping Group was added in 102 to complete the education of merchant shipping. The courses of the university department of this department lay the foundation for students in nautical and maritime transportation. The courses of the master and doctoral courses are mainly for the training of maritime science and marine transportation and other related research talents.
