大南澳越嶺道於國家步道系統介紹如下
蘇花古道建造於清朝同治13 年(1874 年),是聯絡蘇澳與花蓮之間最早的一條官道;日人19 世紀於蘇花海岸之間先後開鑿了北段的大南澳路、南段的沿岸理番道路及東海徒步道,即今日蘇花公路的前身,但早已荒廢舊跡難尋。經過調查後整建「蘇花古道-- 大南澳越嶺段」。古道呈南北縱向,地勢北高南低,因此由北往南走,多為下坡路,路程較輕鬆,若由南往北走,則海拔落差幾達七百公尺,來回行走約5 小時,路程頗具挑戰性。

The Suhua Ancient Road was built in the 13th year of Tongzhi (1874) in the Qing Dynasty. It was the earliest official road between Suao and Hualien. The coastal Lifan Road and the East China Sea Hiking Trail, the predecessor of the Suhua Highway today, are hard to find. After investigation, the "Suhua Ancient Road - Da Nanao Yueling Section" was built. The ancient road is vertical in the north and south, and the terrain is high in the north and low in the south. Therefore, it goes from north to south, mostly downhill, and the journey is relatively easy. If you go from south to north, the altitude difference is up to 700 meters, and the walk is about 5 hours. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 新澳隧道完工後這段路就廢棄了,不過蘇花舊路一直有維護,路況還不差,昔日從新澳隧道北口旁邊走舊路可到,烏石鼻隧道旁邊另有烏石鼻戰備道通往海軍雷達站,不過海軍不知何時突然認為整段舊路跟戰備道都是自己的,新澳隧道口旁的入口已經封了最少兩年以上了,喜歡舊路探勘的人就看看照片流口水吧。
